Full 3 Year Programme - Diploma + Degree

At the end of the three years the student will achieve a Level 6 Qualification.

Entry Requirements 

  • Have an A'Level standard of education; OR
  • A relevant qualification at MQF/EQF Level 4; OR
  • If English is not your first language, you will need IELTS 5.5 or equivalent

 Copies of certificates should be produced. A full CV in EuroFormat with a passport-size photo are also required.

  

Description of Study Programme

This programme is a three year programme consisting of two parts.  The first part leads the student to a BTEC Higher National Diploma at Level 5 whilst the second part awards the student with a B.Sc (Hons) Degree in IT/ Computer Science.

The Higher National Diploma Programme is a BTEC Edexcel Diploma comprising of sixteen modules spread over two academic years.  The modules cover various skills and disciplines in IT preparing the student for the last year of the Bachelor's Degree.  The following are the modules covered:

  • Employability and Professional Development
  • Computer Systems
  • Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation
  • Digital Media in Art and Design
  • Website Management
  • Database Design Concepts
  • Networking Technologies
  • Quality Systems in IT
  • Data Analysis and Design
  • Digital Image Creation and Development
  • Programming in Java
  • Network Infrastructure
  • Networking Security
  • Multimedia Design

The first two years of this degree programme are delivered in a flexible classroom-based trianing method with additional support through online learning platforms.

Students who are succesful in the HND Programme will be eligible to apply for the BSc (Hons) Top-Up Degree through the University of Hertfordshire which consists of the second part of this programme.  Upon acceptance from the University the student will embark on a one year study programme delivered in a blended method system covering 5 modules (2 core, 2 optional and 1 Project) in either Information Technology or Computer Science. Successful completion of these 5 modules awards the student with a Bachelor's Degree with Honours.

 

Programme Aims

The purpose of this qualification and the defined pathways are:

Knowledge and Understanding

  • The methodology of developing programmed solutions and a subset of the tools, notations and techniques appropriate to the various stages of development, from problem identification to system implementation and evaluation.
  • The complexity of interactions between agents, which could be human or programmed systems, at various levels, and the implications of this for the developer of a programme solution.
  • The context within which a professional software designer operates and implications for professional practice including the legal, social, ethical and professional issues involved. 
  • Additionally for BSc Computer Science (CS) award - An in depth understanding of the theories and principles relevant to the design and development of programmed systems and their subsequent use in specific contexts. 
  • Additionally for Information Technology (IT) award - An in depth understanding of the theories and principles relevant to the design and development of information technology systems and their subsequent use in specific contexts.

Practical Skills

  • Use specific tools, techniques, notations and methods in the context of the design and development of programmed computer systems.
  • Use computer systems and associated technology to support the development of programmed systems.
  • Engage in effective discussion of technical information as appropriate to the system design and development task.
  • Carry out design activities ranging from initial problem identification to system implementation and evaluation, and as an individual or participate as a member of a team carrying out a subset of these activities. Additionally for BSc Computer Science (CS) award
  • Design, implement and evaluate systems as characterised by Computer Science approaches, methodologies and practices. Additionally for BSc Information Technology (IT) award
  • Design, Implement and evaluate systems as characterised by Information Technology approaches, methodologies and practices.

Transferable Skills

  • Communicate effectively orally, in writing and visually using the conventions, vocabulary and the form and register of academic expression.
  • Manage their own learning including time management, the organization and retrieval of information, and the identification of personal needs for continuing professional development.
  • Select and use a variety of modes of discourse, including mathematical, informal and diagrammatic.
  • Work effectively both independently and/or as part of a team.
  • Reflect upon their work and the work of others, and explain, justify and otherwise defend their work and ideas, with reference to academic, professional issues, debates and conventions.

 

Method of Assessment 

Modules are assessed by combination of coursework (including essay, design, development of software artifact, technical report, academic report, live presentation, peer review, team work, video log, live demonstration, viva) and online tests. The dates of assignment submission and online tests are fixed.

The online tests are available for a fixed period of time, usually 24-hours, to ensure all students can find a convenient opportunity to complete them within that period. If you cannot meet the assignment deadlines or test dates, you must inform the Module Leader in advance of the deadlines to get appropriate advice.

 Who Should Apply?

Students who wish to commence their studies for a BSc (Hons) in Information Technology or Computer Science and achieve a Diploma after two years.  This course is also suitable for individuals who would like to consolidate their experience by getting a qualification.  It is also an ideal course for mature students who would like to change their career path.

This programme is aimed at individuals who prefer to study in a fully flexible manner whilst keeping their full-time employment.

 

Next Step

Successful completion of the BSc (Hons) Degree at level 2.2 gives the student the opportunity to embark on a one year Masters Degree Programme.
